What Is the Austrian Digital Vignette?

Since 2023, Austria has replaced the traditional adhesive windscreen sticker with a fully digital system. The Digitale Vignette is linked directly to your vehicle's licence plate number. There is no physical sticker to attach — once purchased, the system automatically registers your vehicle as authorised to use Austrian motorways and expressways managed by ASFINAG.

The digital vignette is mandatory for all motor vehicles up to 3.5 tonnes on the designated toll road network. Enforcement is carried out by automated number-plate recognition cameras installed at entry points across the network. Fines for non-compliance start at €120 and can reach several hundred euros.

Key fact: The digital vignette is tied to your licence plate — not to the driver or the vehicle document. If you change your plates, you must purchase a new vignette.

The vignette is available in three durations: 10-day, 2-month, and annual. Each is designed for different travel patterns, from short holiday trips to regular commuters and long-distance drivers. Compare all options on our Pricing page or jump to the Selection Matrix.

Why Is a Vignette Required?

Austria operates a user-pays system for its motorway network. The revenue collected through vignette sales funds the construction, maintenance, and safety improvements of the ASFINAG-managed road network — approximately 2,200 kilometres of motorways and expressways. Without a valid vignette, you are not permitted to drive on these roads, regardless of your nationality or vehicle registration country.

Foreign visitors are equally subject to the requirement. Austrian border police and ASFINAG enforcement teams regularly check compliance. The digital system makes it easier than ever to verify validity in real time — either your plate is registered or it is not.

Note for foreign drivers: You can purchase the digital vignette online before entering Austria. Your foreign licence plate is accepted in the system. See our Service Area page for country-specific guidance.

Preparation Checklist Before You Buy

  • Confirm your vehicle licence plate number (exactly as registered)
  • Check whether your vehicle is under 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight
  • Decide on the vignette type (10-day, 2-month, annual)
  • Choose the start date (today or a future date up to 30 days ahead)
  • Prepare a valid payment method (credit/debit card or PayPal)
  • Have a valid email address ready for confirmation
  • Check if your vehicle has a trailer with its own licence plate
  • Verify the country code prefix on your licence plate is correct
  • Note any planned tunnel crossings — these require separate toll payment
  • Check if your route uses non-ASFINAG roads (no vignette needed there)
  • Confirm you are purchasing from the official ASFINAG channel
  • Save or print your confirmation email for reference
  • Check that your vehicle registration document matches the plate
  • If renting a car, confirm the rental company has not already purchased a vignette

Boundaries and Exceptions

Understanding the exceptions helps you avoid unexpected fines or unnecessary purchases.
  1. Heavy vehicles (>3.5t): Must use the GO-Box electronic toll system instead of a vignette.
  2. Special toll sections: The Brenner motorway (A13), Tauern motorway (A10), Arlberg tunnel, and several other routes require additional point-to-point tolls regardless of vignette.
  3. Trailers and caravans: A separate vignette is required for any trailer or caravan with its own registered licence plate.
  4. Exempt vehicles: Emergency vehicles, military vehicles, and certain agricultural machines are exempt.
  5. Electric vehicles: EVs are not exempt — they require a vignette just like combustion-engine vehicles.
  6. Rental cars: Check with your rental company — many pre-purchase vignettes, but this is not guaranteed.
  7. Plate changes: If you change your licence plate, the old vignette becomes invalid; a new one must be purchased.
  8. Validity window: The 10-day and 2-month vignettes begin on the chosen start date; they cannot be paused or extended.
  9. Refund policy: Once the validity period has started, no refund is possible.
  10. Non-ASFINAG roads: Provincial and municipal roads do not require a vignette even if they are motorway-standard.
