The Austrian digital vignette system covers several vehicle categories, each with specific rules, pricing and purchase procedures. Use the Selection Matrix to find your match quickly.

Passenger Cars and Light Vehicles

The standard digital vignette applies to all motor vehicles with a maximum permissible gross weight of up to 3.5 tonnes. This covers the vast majority of private cars, SUVs, vans and minibuses used for personal transport. The vignette is registered to the vehicle's licence plate and is valid on all ASFINAG-managed motorways and expressways throughout Austria.

Gross weight check: The gross vehicle weight (GVW) is shown on your vehicle registration document. Look for "F.2" or "Gesamtgewicht". If it exceeds 3,500 kg, you need a GO-Box instead.

Motorcycles

Motorcycles, mopeds and scooters require a separate vignette category. The pricing is the same as for passenger cars, but the vignette is registered to the motorcycle's specific licence plate. Sidecars do not require an additional vignette as long as the sidecar is not a separate registered vehicle.

Motorhomes and Campervans

Motorhomes are subject to the same rules as passenger cars if their gross vehicle weight is under 3.5 tonnes. Larger motorhomes over 3.5 tonnes fall into the heavy vehicle category and must use the GO-Box system. Many modern motorhomes are close to the 3.5t limit — always check your registration document before purchasing.

Important: A motorhome towing a trailer requires a separate vignette for the trailer if the trailer has its own licence plate.

Trailers and Caravans

Any trailer or caravan with its own registered licence plate requires a separate vignette. This applies to: caravans, boat trailers, horse trailers, utility trailers with their own plate, and car transport trailers. Unregistered trailers (those sharing the towing vehicle's plate) do not require a separate vignette.

Heavy Vehicles (over 3.5 Tonnes)

Vehicles exceeding 3.5 tonnes gross vehicle weight — including trucks, lorries, large motorhomes and buses — are not covered by the vignette system. They must use the GO-Box electronic toll device, which calculates charges based on distance travelled, number of axles and emission class.

Special Toll Sections

Even with a valid vignette, certain sections of the Austrian road network require additional point-to-point tolls:
